Opdivo (nivolumab) and Yervoy (ipilimumab) Side Effects
Posted on: November 1, 2023 *Updated on: May 27, 2024Opdivo (nivolumab) and Yervoy (ipilimumab) are immunotherapy medications used to treat certain types of cancer. They work by helping the immune system fight cancer cells. While these medications are generally considered to have fewer side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy, they can still cause a range of side effects, both mild and severe.
Common Side Effects:
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Decreased appetite
- Rashes
- Body aches
More Serious Side Effects:
- Difficulty breathing
- Hormonal changes
- Liver problems
- Kidney problems
- Intestinal problems (colitis)
- Skin problems (severe rash, blistering)
- Endocrine problems (thyroid dysfunction, adrenal insufficiency, etc.)
It is worth noting that Opdivo and Yervoy can cause “immune-related adverse events,” in which the immune system attacks normal organs and tissues in many areas of the body and can affect the way they work. These can become serious or life-threatening if not addressed. Therefore, patients on these therapies need to be closely monitored by their healthcare providers.
Management:
If a patient experiences side effects, the healthcare team may need to adjust the dosage or temporarily stop the treatment. Supportive medications can sometimes be administered to manage some side effects. For more serious side effects, like difficulty breathing or hormonal imbalances, treatment may be discontinued, and immediate medical intervention is often required.
It’s essential for patients to discuss all symptoms they are experiencing with their healthcare providers to determine the best course of action.
Precautions:
Patients receiving Opdivo and Yervoy may require regular blood tests to monitor for changes in liver, kidney, and thyroid function, among other things. Before starting treatment, discuss with your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking and any other pre-existing medical conditions you have.
