The Rise and Fall of Asbestos Use
Posted on: December 8, 2023 *Updated on: May 27, 2024The United States experienced a significant surge in asbestos production during World War II. The use of asbestos continued to be widespread throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, resulting in around 27 million Americans being exposed to substantial quantities of asbestos by the late 1970s.
However, around this period, concerns regarding asbestos sparked public discussions. As a consequence, the production and utilization of asbestos began to decline steadily. By 2001, the annual production had plummeted to just 5,000 tons.
