Teachers Face Asbestos Risk

Teachers face a significant risk of asbestos exposure, with rates of mesothelioma comparable to those found in high-risk asbestos occupations. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the proportionate mortality ratio for teachers is 2.1, indicating a higher likelihood of dying from mesothelioma than the general population.

This ratio mirrors that of other occupations traditionally associated with asbestos exposure, such as plumbers and mechanical engineers. The elevated risk underscores the need for greater awareness and protective measures for teachers, who may encounter asbestos in older school buildings and materials.
