Stage 3 Pleural Mesothelioma
Posted on: December 20, 2023 *Updated on: May 27, 2024Stage 3 Pleural Mesothelioma is characterized by the absence of spread to the opposite side of the chest but with confirmed metastasis to the lymph nodes. It is considered to be locally aggressive, as it affects the nearby lung and may have also extended to other organs. In some cases, curative surgery may not be a viable treatment option.
Stage 3 is further divided into two sub-stages, 3A and 3B, based on the extent of cancer spread as classified by the TNM system. Stage 3B, though still involving localized metastasis, poses greater challenges for surgical intervention.
The cancer is likely to have reached surrounding tissues, including:
- The tissue between the ribs and the lining of the chest wall.
- The fat located between the lungs.
- The soft tissue within the chest wall, extending beyond the lining.
- The sac surrounding the heart, known as the pericardium.
