Key Facts About Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the abdomen, known as the peritoneum. Here are some key facts about this disease:

  1. Incidence Rate: Out of the approximately 3,000 mesothelioma cases diagnosed annually in the United States, between 300 and 500 are peritoneal mesothelioma cases. This represents about 10% to 17% of all mesothelioma diagnoses.
  2. Gender Distribution: Unlike other forms of mesothelioma, which are more common in men, the incidence of peritoneal mesothelioma is equally distributed between men and women.
  3. Primary Risk Factor: The only proven way to reduce the risk of developing peritoneal mesothelioma is through the prevention of asbestos exposure. Asbestos, a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals, is the primary cause of mesothelioma. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they can become lodged in the lining of the abdomen, leading to the development of peritoneal mesothelioma over time.

Awareness and prevention of asbestos exposure are crucial in minimizing the risk of this rare but serious cancer.
