How asbestos was used in aluminum plants

Asbestos had many desirable properties that made it suitable for use in the metalworking industry, including aluminum plants. The mineral could withstand the industry’s use of corrosive chemicals, high-voltage electric power, and high temperatures. Due to these attributes, asbestos was heavily utilized throughout many sites until the 1980s.

In aluminum plants, asbestos was frequently employed because of its natural heat resistance, making it a common insulator in high-heat environments. Besides aluminum plants, asbestos was also widely used in steel mills and other metalworking facilities. This extensive usage has led to the presence of asbestos in many plants across the country to this day.

Asbestos found its way into numerous areas within aluminum plants. It was used in construction materials for plant buildings, in machinery for manufacturing and refining aluminum, and in fireproof safety clothing for plant workers. Consequently, aluminum plant workers were often exposed to asbestos products while working in these facilities.
