Asbestos Use in Power Plants

Before the 1980s, power plants frequently used asbestos-containing materials for their machinery due to the high pressure and temperatures involved. Asbestos was valued for its durability and heat resistance, and it was also used for fireproofing by lining machines and pipes with asbestos insulation.

Power plant workers often came into contact with asbestos while performing maintenance and repairs, releasing asbestos fibers into the air when cutting through insulation. This frequent exposure put workers at risk, leading many to develop asbestos-related illnesses later in life.
