Statistics

A research study done at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York shows that asbestos workers who also smoked cigarettes had 50 to 90 times increase in lung cancer deaths than those who neither smoked nor were exposed to asbestos.

Heavy asbestos exposure increases the chance of lung cancer by a factor of 5 while cigarette smoking and other tobacco products increase it by a factor of 10.

Both cigarette smoking and heavy asbestos exposure can increase the chance of lung cancer by a factor of 50.

The research study done at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York showed that the combination of asbestos exposure and the carcinogens in cigarettes multiplied the risk of lung cancer “synergestically.”

It has been noted that when a person stops smoking cigarettes, his risk of getting a lung cancer disease drops immediately. Infact, not smoking for the next 10-15 years will make that person as healthy as a non-smoker!

However, a person who has been exposed to asbestos remains prone to lung cancer even if he stopped smoking, many years ago.

Treatments

Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation (or a combination of these 3) can result in complete cure or long term survival. These treatments work even better when asbestos has been diagnosed early on.

The modern treatment, chemotherapy has the least side effects.
